It all began in the year 1874 when the Bank of the West was opened as “Farmers National Gold Bank” in California. At that point in time, it was one of those 10 banks that had the authority to issue paper currency. The bank was highly involved in helping people build their homes and develop their business. Over the year the bank grew bigger and continued providing great services. Later in the year 1880, it was renamed as the National Gold Bank.

After the end of World War II, high growth was seen in the bank. The total assets recorded in the year 1979 were $350 billion and in the same year the bank’s name was changed to the “Bank of the West”. Currently, there are 600 wealth, business, commercial, and retail banking offices of the bank in 23 states. There has been a growth of more than $80.7 billion in the assets of the bank.

The time period of the 1980s and 1990s was the one when the Bank of the West bought several other banks and branches. It bought the Bank of Los Gatos in the year 1987. After this, the bank also purchased the Central Banking Systems in 1990. This was followed by the purchase of 30 branches in Northern California in 1991. Also, in 1992 it purchased the Atlantic Financial Federal Savings Bank. Another purchase in Northern California occurred from Citibank for $360 million. This time the purchase was of 15 branches. In 1995 and 1995 the purchase was of NorthBay Savings Bank and branches of Bank of America respectively.
